The True Definition of Value

The word “value” has been used in marketing vocabulary for many years. When an item is said to be of “value” it means that the product or service is “worth the money.” Customers could rest assured that they were getting a good product at a fair and reasonable price. This does not mean that expensive products have value and cheap products do not. It simply means that when an object or service is of value if it is worth the price you pay for it.

But today in this recession economy the word “value” has taken on a new meaning. It has come to mean “cheap” or “bargain,” “economical” and even “discounted.” Consumers have closed their collective wallets, so retailers, distributors and manufacturers are cutting prices to move product off the shelf. The result is that customers have come to expect discounts, reduced rates, and bargain prices for the same products or services they purchased in the past. What does this say to your customer?  That the products and services you offer are not worth the prices that you initially charged for them. Now they have lost value in the mind of your customer, and it will be very difficult to raise prices once the economic engine starts churning again. In the end, a once valued global brand will no longer be esteemed in the eyes of the customer.

There is another side to this problem.  As retailers, distributors and manufacturers slash prices to move product, they in turn need to cut expenses. There is very little profit in those bargain prices. So in response, companies downsize their workforce; cut back on purchasing raw material and supplies, and delay capital investments. This further depresses the economy.
